OCTOBER ODDS & ENDS

Traveling With Electronics : October Odds & Ends

who's that kid playin' trombone

     all crazy.....bob hoffnar

I don't really have any specific point of focus for this month so it's more of a tapas kinda thing - little plates of tasty information that will hopefully leave you satisfied.

My Colorado Conduction Ensemble The FluxCrew will be performing at the beautiful Pine Street Church in November. I will have more on that in next month's blog, but if you are going to be in the Boulder/Denver area or if you have any friends in the area tickets are available HERE : Please join us for an evening of Sonic Shape-Shifting.

APPLE'S PARADE OF ABANDONMENT KEEPS MARCHING FORWARD

iOS 12 has drooped and the good news is that it appears to make first generation 64bit devices like the air1 & mini2 actually run better, but the really good news for many of us is that SAMPLR is still alive! Other than that it's just.....you know.....

I think it's best expressed in this amusing video created by Jakob Haq

JUST TURN QUANTIZE OFF AND LEARN TO PLAY THE INSTRUMENT

I recently found this video about J Dilla and thought it would make a nice follow up to last month's post... "how to put some breath in your tech" ... PLAY-BACK OR PLAY

Every instrument has a unique set of physical techniques which allow you to become expressive on that instrument. The more gradation of possibility in the physicality of the controller (front end, GUI), the greater the nuance of expression. This would put a laptop computer with a qwerty keyboard (just a collection of on/off buttons) and a mouse (a pointy clicky thing) at the bottom of the "nuanced expression spectrum".

         SAMPLR                  THUMBJAM            SPACECRAFT        GESTRUMENT PRO

GESTURE IS THE LATEST PHYSICAL TECHNIQUE TO COME TO MUSIC

Now there is nothing new about using movement capture as a physical controller for software based instruments but the multi-touch screens found on today's ubiquitous rectangles have moved it front & center as a potent option for nuanced expression.

SAMPLR : THUMBJAM : SPACECRAFT : GESTRUMENT PRO are all perfect examples of the level of innovation going on these days with developers & iOS.
